Laura Pettigrew - Composer

The Artist
FEBRUARY 2018

It was a tremendous honour attending the prestigious ceremony in Ottawa on Parliament Hill February 13, 2018
to celebrate the culmination of
Toronto Symphony Orchestra’s Canada 150 celebrations, in particular the
Sesquie Fanfare  project
. The flagship project of the TSO's Canada Mosaic presented 40 new orchestral works
written
by composers across Canada and performed by orchestras in every province
as well as
the Yukon  and Northwest Territories.

Toronto Symphony Orchestra presented a custom-made book of the 40 scores and CD of the 40 Sesquie Fanfares to
Minister of Heritage, Hon. Mélanie Joly M.P., to thank her and the Department of Canadian Heritage for their
support of the Canada Mosaic project. Composers in attendance signed the book of scores  presented
to Minister Joly.  Following presentation the book of Sesquie Fanfare scores and
CD  were added to the collection of the Library & Archives Canada

JUNE 2016

It was the most magical, amazing experience being honoured with an artist residency at Wildacres Retreat  in June
located in the  Blue Ridge Mountains, Little Switzerland NC USA.  I was thrilled to have the opportunity to attend
the world premiere
of my work “Soaring….on eagles’ wings” (for flute quintet and piano)
featuring Wildacres Flute Quintet attending the International Flute Masterclass
Wildacres Flute Retreat.
To have the peace and serenity in my own cabin surrounded by nature was truly  inspiring
allowing me to accomplish so much writing. Artists globally are so fortunate for the ongoing, support provided
by the Blumenthal Foundation, (Philp and Amy Blumenthal)
 providing residencies to artists annually.

Legend of Draco

October 25,  2014  RSO Masterworks Series
Regina Symphony Orchestra conducted by  Maestro Boguslaw  Dawidow

Concert review BY CHRISTOPHER TESSMER THE LEADER-POST OCTOBER 27, 2014

RSO performance was macabre, sublime, fantastique
Beginning with the world premiere of Regina-born composer Laura Pettigrew's Legend of Draco, the celebrated local
orchestra  was outstanding. Pettigrew's three-movement symphony, which she introduced and noted, was based on a Celtic
legend.  Legend of Draco  was sublime with a style reminiscent of the acclaimed scores of the television show Game of Thrones,
in the sense that it evoked images of an ancient world, battle and a mythical creature.

Patrons were drawn in by the composition that alternated between romantic and epic moments and brilliantly utilized many
percussive elements. Often used minimally as part of orchestrations, Pettigrew's Legend of Draco made them a focal point in the
third movement and led it to a grandiose conclusion. Simply put - it was awesome.
